How to Evaluate a Grow Light Catalog: 7 Checks Before Choosing OEM or Private Label

If you're sourcing Fluence LED grow lights for a greenhouse, evaluating a grow light catalog for resale, or picking fixtures from a ceiling light catalog for a commercial project, you've probably hit the same wall: everything looks the same after the third PDF. Wattage, photon flux, IP ratings — it all blurs together.

This is a 7-step checklist for evaluating any grow light catalog, including the OEM vs private label decision that trips up buyers more than anything else.

Step 1: Start with PPFD Maps, Not Wattage

The most common mistake I see: buyers comparing grow lights by wattage. It's the wrong starting point, honestly.

What actually matters is the PPFD map — photosynthetic photon flux density across the canopy. A 640W light with well-designed optics can deliver more uniform coverage than a 700W light with sloppy lens design. And uniformity determines your hanging height and your fixture count.

When you review a grow light catalog, find the PPFD map for your target mounting height. If the catalog only lists peak PPFD or a single number, that's a red flag — it tells me the manufacturer isn't confident in their optical design. If you're comparing a Fluence grow light catalog with another brand's, compare maps at the same height, not just the highest number on the page.

Step 2: Verify the Components Inside

A grow light is an assembly. LEDs, drivers, optics, thermal management — each part determines performance.

In my experience, the driver is the component that fails first. Ask what driver is inside. Ask about its rated lifespan at the operating temperature you'll run. And ask whether the catalog names the component manufacturer — or just says "high-quality constant-current driver."

Certifications get a lot of attention. The date attached to the certification gets almost none.

A UL listing from 2019 may not cover the product revision shipping in 2025. An IP66 rating — per IEC 60529 — only applies to the exact configuration tested. Change the optical lens or the gasket material, and the rating can become invalid.

In our Q1 2024 audit of supplier documentation, 8 of 30 catalogs cited certification numbers that didn't match the product revision being offered. 8 out of 30.

That's why I tell customers: verify certification numbers directly with the testing laboratory. For horticultural lighting, UL 8800 is the key standard to check as of 2025. For commercial lighting, look at UL 1598 and current DLC requirements. And don't just trust the logo on the PDF — ask for the report number and the date.

Step 4: Read the Warranty Language Like a Skeptic

Warranty language is where catalogs get... creative.

Things I check:

  • What's covered — LEDs only, or driver and labor too?
  • Is the warranty prorated? Prorated warranties are basically a discount on future purchases, not real protection.
  • Who files the claim — manufacturer, distributor, or you?
  • What's the promised resolution time?

I still kick myself for signing off on a "5-year warranty" years ago that was actually 2 years full coverage plus 3 years prorated. Technically accurate. Practically misleading. If I'd read the footnote, I would have negotiated completely different terms.

Here's the thing: if the warranty section runs more than a paragraph, read every sentence. If it runs less, ask why.

Step 5: Read the Catalog Like a Legal Document

I read every catalog twice — once for the product information, once for accuracy.

The accuracy pass:

  • Check revision dates on every spec sheet
  • Compare overview claims against detailed specs
  • Look for tolerance ranges, not single-point numbers
  • Read the footnotes

I've seen a product page claim "up to 90% uniformity," with a footnote that read "at ideal mounting height, 25°C ambient, clear conditions." That's a lab result, not a field spec. Put another way: it's marketing, not engineering.

This applies to ceiling light catalogs too. Beam angles, color rendering, dimming curves — commercial lighting spec sheets have the same footnote problem.

Step 6: Understand OEM vs Private Label

This is the question I get most: how do you decide between grow light OEM vs private label?

Let me be direct. OEM means the manufacturer builds to your specification. You define the components, performance targets, and quality standards. You own the specification — and the risk if it fails.

Private label means the manufacturer takes a product already in their catalog, puts your brand on it, and ships it. You own the brand, not the design. If the manufacturer changes the product later, your recourse is limited.

Both are legitimate. They solve different problems. OEM gives you control; private label gives you speed and lower minimums. The question I ask every customer is simple: do you want to own the specification, or do you want to own the brand?

It took me about 4 years and 150+ catalog reviews to understand that this is a control question, not a cost question. When a customer thinks they're getting OEM control but actually signed a private label agreement, that's a $50,000 misunderstanding in the making.

When I help customers weigh this, the upside is always the same: full control over the spec. The risk: they inherit responsibility for every component choice. I keep asking them — is that control worth the exposure? For some, yes. For others, absolutely not.

One more thing: "semi-custom" isn't OEM. Changing the brand plate and cable length? That's private label with extra steps. Nothing wrong with it — just know what you're buying.

Step 7: Get a Physical Sample, Not Just a PDF

If there's one step that should be a no-brainer, it's this one: request a sample. Yet it's the step most buyers skip.

A datasheet tells you what the manufacturer wants you to believe. A sample tells you the truth. Run the fixture. Measure actual power draw. Inspect the housing, connectors, and finish. Check whether the physical product matches the catalog spec within tolerance.

For our largest annual order, the sample phase caught a problem that would have cost us about $180,000. The spec sheet showed a clean build. The sample had a housing that flexed under light pressure and connectors that didn't seat properly. The catalog was beautiful. The product wasn't.

Samples take time and cost money. They're still way cheaper than a bad batch.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Comparing lights by wattage instead of PPFD maps.
  • Assuming certifications are current.
  • Skimming past footnotes.
  • Paying OEM prices for private label products.
  • Ordering from an undated spec sheet.
  • Skipping the sample because the datasheet looked good.

Also: ask "is this current?" Every catalog goes out of date. Revision drift is normal. A spec sheet from 14 months ago may not match what's shipping today.
