If you're buying LED grow lights wholesale, the first thing you should ask for is a photometric file, not a quote. That's the conclusion. Good manufacturers publish them. Ambiguous manufacturers say "we can send it after purchase." That's a red flag.
People think expensive fixtures deliver better results. Actually, fixtures that deliver predictable photons can charge more. The causation runs the other way. A photometric file is the proof of that predictability. It's easy to get distracted by efficacy numbers, but those numbers assume the fixture actually performs as tested. The file is the "show your work" part.
Five minutes of verification beats five days of correction.
I'm not an electrical engineer, so I can't speak to diode-level differences or driver design. What I can tell you from a procurement perspective is that a manufacturer's willingness to share raw data predicts how they'll behave after the purchase order.
How to Evaluate a Grow Light Manufacturer
In 2023, I brought in a vendor because their upfront price was 12% below our incumbent. The spec sheet looked good. But the photometric file didn't match their published PPFD map; the real numbers were about 20% lower in the core coverage area. We caught it before the bulk order, but only because a grower on our team asked for the file and ran a quick simulation. Five minutes of verification beats five days of correction. That's when I built a checklist. It's not a perfect system. It's nine practical questions that have saved us at least one six-figure mistake, in my estimate.
The checklist I use
- Can they send the photometric file before purchase? If no, drop them.
- Does the published PPFD map match the file? Run it in a free viewer or ask for a layout.
- Is input wattage specified with a tolerance range? "Typical" without a range is marketing.
- What dimming and control protocols are supported? 0-10V is common; consider DALI if you're scaling up.
- What's the IP rating? If you're growing in high humidity, IP66 is different from IP20.
- How do warranty replacements actually ship? Who pays freight? Do they require inspection before sending a replacement?
- Are spare parts available for this fixture model after 24 months? "Limited lifetime" doesn't mean much if the driver was discontinued.
- What's the lead time in writing? A verbal "two weeks" is not a lead time.
- If you're buying private label or OEM, which specs are you allowed to adjust—spectrum, driver, mounting? Are those changes documented in the final spec sheet?
What I learned the hard way
I still kick myself for a purchase order I cut in 2022 without checking the warranty freight terms. The driver failed on 40 fixtures, and the vendor required us to ship all 40 drivers back at our cost before sending replacements. That was $1,700 in freight—maybe $1,800, I'd have to check—and a month of uneven canopy light. Our growers noticed. My VP noticed.
That's the "prevention" part. The checklist costs twenty minutes. A failed fixture order costs weeks. I know which one I prefer.

You agree on spectrum, driver, and housing, and the final spec sheet becomes part of the purchase agreement.

When Fluence Is—and Isn't—the Right Fit
This guide worked for us, but our situation is specific: a mid-size controlled-environment operation with predictable grow cycles and an in-house maintenance team. If you're a small hydroponic store buying ten fixtures, you probably don't need to talk to a manufacturer directly. Work with a local distributor and use the same checklist.
I can only speak to domestic operations. If you're importing fixtures, electrical certification, country of origin, and freight terms change the math. Verify UL, CE, or DLC status for your region with the manufacturer and your local authority. According to the DesignLights Consortium's website (designlights.org), qualified horticultural fixtures are listed based on technical requirements, but you should verify current requirements before assuming a rebate or code path.
Finally, a good fixture doesn't guarantee crop outcomes. I'm not a horticulturist, so I can't tell you how to light a lettuce stack or a tomato trellis. What I can tell you is that the best grow light manufacturer in the world won't fix poor airflow, inconsistent water, or an unstable climate. Lighting is one input in a larger system.
And one more boundary: Fluence isn't the cheapest option. If your purchasing policy is "lowest bid wins," this brand will probably lose to a lower-cost importer. That's okay. Different organizations have different constraints. But if you value documentation, support, and a manufacturer who sends files that match their claims, that's what you're paying for. Predictability is a product.
